Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team defeated UH-Hilo 2-0 today in a Pacific West Conference match. The Seasiders and Vulcans, as they did eight days ago in the Hawaii Challenge Cup, played to a scoreless first half before BYU-Hawaii took over the game in the second half.
Freshman Dillon Richens put the Seasiders on the scoreboard in the 73rd minute with a goal off a rebound. Another freshman, Brandon Barfuss, added a goal in the 88th minute off a free kick from in front of the goal. It was the first goal of their collegiate careers for each of the Seasiders.
BYU-Hawaii goalie Josiah Holtz was outstanding in recording the shutout. He saved six shots in the contest and made several spectacular plays.
With the win the Seasiders improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference and matched their overall win total from last season. UH-Hilo fell to 2-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the PacWest with the loss.
BYU–Hawaii will be in action again on September 26th against Grand Canyon in Laie at 3:00 pm in another conference match.
