Drew Hits Gamewinner as Seasiders Top Vulcans

Laie, HI—Junior Zori Drew banked in a short jumper as she was fouled with seven seconds to play to tie the game and then swished the free throw to give the Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s basketball team a thrilling 71-70 victory over UH-Hilo tonight in a Pacific West Conference game.  Drew, who sparked the Seasiders with a career-high 15 points off the bench scored the last five points for BYU–Hawaii as the Seasiders improved to 9-13 for the season and 5-7 in the PacWest.

The Seasiders started the game as if they were going to run away from the Vulcans.  After UH-Hilo scored the game’s opening basket, the Seasiders reeled off ten straight points and soon opened a 17-6 lead.  However, the Vulcans battled back and eventually took a one-point lead shortly before the first half ended with the Seasiders on top 36-35.

BYU–Hawaii opened the second half with a Richelle Fenenbock three-pointer but the score remained close throughout the period.  The Seasiders held an eight-point advantage with just over five minutes remaining but the Vulcans chipped away and finally took a two-point lead on a Hina Kimitete three-pointer with just 26 seconds to play.  The Seasiders worked the ball inside the paint to Madison Kite who found drew open to the right of the basket to set up the game-winning shots.  A late three-point attempt by the Vulcans was off and the Seasiders escaped with the win.

Fenenbock hit three three-pointers and finished with 20 points to lead the Seasiders.  Drew added four rebounds and three assists to her scoring while Dara Tompkison contributed nine points and nine assists for the Seasiders.  Mahina Gago led the way on the boards with six rebounds for the Seasiders.

Kimitete scored 13 points to lead the Vulcans, now 9-13 for the season and 5-7 in the PacWest.  Kirsti Imai had 12 points and Amanda Muller ten in the loss.

BYU–Hawaii honored three players on senior night immediately following the game.  Felisita Ika, Gago, and Zsazsa Lawson were honored for their contributions to the team.  Ika is the first women’s basketball player to play four years for the Seasiders.  She joined the team for its inaugural season in 2006-07.

BYU–Hawaii will face Hawaii Pacific on Saturday in Honolulu at 5:30 pm HST.
