Seasiders Open with Two Losses
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team opened the season today with a pair of losses to Hawaii Pacific. The Seasiders dropped the first game 11-1 and came up short in the second game by a score of 4-0. Both of the games were non-conference contests.
The Seasiders made some costly mistakes in the opener that allowed the visiting Sea Warriors to score five unearned runs to open a 6-0 lead after four innings. Hawaii Pacific tacked on five more in the top of the fifth before the Seasiders finally broke through for a single run in the bottom of the fifth when Ashley Parry singled, advanced to second on a groundout, stole third, and scored on a throw to first following another groundout. BYU–Hawaii managed just two hits in the opening game, the other one being a double to the left-center field fence by Brooke Perriton in the fourth inning.
Freshman Hannah Bateman pitched a strong game for the Seasiders in the second game, giving up just two earned runs in going the distance, but BYU–Hawaii couldn’t push a run across against a pair of Hawaii Pacific pitchers despite getting seven hits, all singles. Seven different players got the hits for BYU–Hawaii but the Seasiders were unable to string enough of them together to score a run.
BYU–Hawaii will face Vanguard University on Saturday, February 13th in Laie at 12:00 pm in a non-conference doubleheader.
