Seasiders Topple Urban Knights
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team coasted to its second win of the week tonight with a 102-67 win over Academy of Art that wasn’t even as close as the final score indicates. The Seasiders scored the first eight points of the Pacific West Conference game and ran out to a 19-2 lead over the winless Urban Knights as BYU–Hawaii improved to 11-5 for the season and 5-2 in the PacWest.
The Seasiders led 51-21 at halftime and increased the lead to 52 points on a three-pointer by Mustapha El-Akkari that gave BYU–Hawaii an 89-37 lead with 10:20 still to play in the game. The Urban Knights rallied against the Seasider bench to close the gap to the final margin.
Senior Lucas Alves scored 24 points in just 21 minutes of action to lead the Seasiders. He also pulled down seven rebounds in the win. A.J. Reilly hit 6-8 from the field for 15 points and also grabbed seven rebounds for BYU–Hawaii. Heath Gameren and Gary Satterwhite scored nine points apiece and Gameren handed out six assists while Cory Chase added eight points and seven rebounds off the bench. J.R. Buensuceso and Marques Whippy each added five assists and Buensuceso came up with four steals. Garrett Sandberg added eight points for the Seasiders. Jordan Anderson and Whippy each scored six points in the win.
Aaron Aikman scored 20 points to lead Academy of Art, now 0-18 for the season and 0-8 in the conference. Jordan Knox and Jonathan Burnett each had ten points and Lance Olivier had eight assists for the Urban Knights.
BYU-Hawaii will face Dominican (CA) next, on Saturday in Laie at 7:30 pm HST in another Pacific West Conference contest.
