Seasiders Swamp Argonauts
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team shot the lights out in the first half and clamped down defensively in the second half to run away from Notre Dame de Namur tonight, 92-48, in a Pacific West Conference game. The Seasiders shot 76 percent (19-25) from the field and 81.8 percent (9-11) from three-point range in the opening period to take a 51-30 halftime lead and then held the Argonauts without a field goal for over seven minutes to start the second half as they increased the lead to 66-31 and cruised to the win to improve to 10-5 for the season and 4-2 in the PacWest.
BYU–Hawaii shot a mere 63 percent (17-27) from the field and only 50 percent (3-6) from long range in the second half to finish the night at 69.2 percent from the field and 70.6 percent from the three-point line. Notre Dame de Namur shot just 25.9 percent (7-27) from the field in the second half and finished the game at 31 percent from the floor. The Seasiders won the battle of the boards by pulling down 36 rebounds to just 23 for the Argonauts and handed out 28 assists as a team to just nine for Notre Dame de Namur.
Rory Patterson hit four three-pointers and several dunks to finish with 23 points to lead all scorers. J.R. Buensuceso hit three from long range and tallied 12 points while Heath Gameren finished with 11 and Gary Satterwhite ten for BYU–Hawaii. Buensuceso handed out six assists as did A.J. Reilly to go with his nine points. Marques Whippy grabbed six rebounds, scored eight points, came up with two steals and added three assists in just 16 minutes of play and Cory Chase finished with seven points and four rebounds in the win.
Bennie Murray scored 15 points to lead Notre Dame de Namur, but was scoreless in the second half. Nick Storment and Cheynne Lishman each had eight points as the Argonauts fell to 2-17 for the season and 0-8 in the conference.
BYU-Hawaii will face Academy of Art next, on Wednesday in Laie at 7:30 pm HST in another Pacific West Conference contest.
