Whippy Leads Seasiders Over Antelopes

Phoenix, AZ—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team got back on the winning track tonight as they defeated Grand Canyon on the road 69-64 in a Pacific West Conference game.  The Seasiders overcame a poor-shooting first half and a 13-point Grand Canyon lead to improve to 7-4 for the season and 1-1 in the PacWest.

BYU–Hawaii trailed most of the first half and was down 37-24 with less than three minutes to play in the period but scored the last eight points of the half to trail 37-32 at halftime.  After shooting just 38.2 percent from the field in the opening period, the Seasiders scorched the nets for 58.8 percent after intermission and took the lead for good on a Marques Whippy layup with 11:31 to play in the game.

Whippy finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Seasiders to the win.  He also dished out three assists and came up with a pair of steals.  A.J. Reilly scored 14 points and J.R. Buensuceso and Gary Satterwhite each added ten for BYU–Hawaii.  Rory Patterson hit a pair of three-pointers in the second half and finished with six points and six rebounds for the Seasiders.

Brad Carroll scored 16 points to lead Grand Canyon, now 6-12 for the season and 0-2 in the conference.  T.J. Benson and Marco Ramos each had ten points for the Antelopes.

The Seasiders will face UH-Hilo next Saturday in Pacific West Conference play in Hilo at 7:30 pm HST.
