Seasiders Fall at Dixie
St. George, UT—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team opened Pacific West Conference play with a road loss at Dixie State, 86-78, tonight. The Seasiders suffered their second straight defeat to fall to 6-4 for the season and are 0-1 in the PacWest.
BYU–Hawaii trailed most of the first half and was down 45-38 at halftime. However, the Seasiders came back to take the lead on three separate occasions in the second half and held a 69-67 advantage with just under four minutes to play in the game. But the Red Storm came back to take the lead and held on down the stretch for the win.
J.R. Buensuceso scored 25 points to lead the Seasiders in scoring and hit four of the team’s eight three-pointers in the game. A.J. Reilly added 14 points and six steals for BYU–Hawaii. Gary Satterwhite chipped in nine points and Garrett Sandberg eight. Lucas Alves, playing in just his second game of the season after recovering from knee surgery, scored four points in the first three minutes of the game but was held scoreless the rest of the way. He played just 15 minutes but blocked four shots in the game. Cory Chase grabbed eight teams to lead the Seasiders on the boards.
Tom Whitehead scored 24 points to lead Dixie State, now 7-3 for the season and 1-0 in the conference. Donovan Plunkett had 18 and Nick Howard 14 for the Red Storm.
The Seasiders will face Grand Canyon on Saturday in Pacific West Conference play in Phoenix, Arizona at 7:30 pm MST.
