Seasiders Fall in OT

Laie, HI—The 18th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team failed to hold a 13-point second half lead tonight and lost to Chapman 76-70 in overtime in a non-conference game.  The Seasiders led 57-44 with eight minutes to play and still had a ten-point margin at 64-54 with under three minutes to go in regulation, but fell victim to Chapman’s hot shooting and a pair of costly turnovers down the stretch as the Panthers rallied force the overtime and then held the Seasiders scoreless from the field in the extra period to get the win.

Chapman’s Griffin Ramme hit a three-pointer with 2:52 to play to cut BYU–Hawaii’s lead to single digits, and after a pair of Panther field goals and three BYU–Hawaii free throws, hit two more three-pointers to tie the game at 67-67.  BYU–Hawaii had a chance to win the game and avoid overtime but misfired with four seconds to play.  The Panthers made their last seven shots from the field in regulation.

In the overtime period BYU–Hawaii went 0-5 from the field and just 3-6 from the free throw line and the Panthers scored seven of the last eight points of the period to improve to 11-2 for the season.  BYU–Hawaii fell to 6-3 for the year with the loss.

A.J. Reilly came off the bench to score 18 points on 7-10 shooting to lead BYU–Hawaii.  Reilly also pulled down four rebounds, handed out a team-high three assists and made two steals.  The game marked the return to action of last season’s NCAA II Player of the Year Lucas Alves for BYU–Hawaii.  Alves, who missed the early part of the season while recovering from off-season knee surgery, scored 12 points and grabbed three rebounds during 20 minutes of action.  J.R. Buensuceso scored ten points for the Seasiders and Marques Whippy pulled down five rebounds to go with his eight points.  Rory Patterson grabbed eight rebounds and scored six points off the bench while Gary Satterwhite came in for seven points and two steals.

Ramme, who hit 5-8 from long distance in the game, scored 25 points and Justin Riley 20 to lead Chapman.  Riley had 14 rebounds in the win.

The Seasiders will open Pacific West Conference play on Thursday against Dixie State in St. George, Utah at 7:30 pm MST.
