Seasiders Stop Clan

Laie, HI—The seventh-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team used a decisive 23-4 run that closed out the first half to propel them to a 69-59 non-conference win over Simon Fraser tonight.  The Seasiders, tied with the Clan at 21-21 with just under eight minutes to play in the opening period, surged to a 44-25 halftime lead on the strength of the run and held off the Canadian visitors in the second half despite hitting only seven shots from the field after intermission.

J.R. Buensuceso scored 24 points and dished out six assists to lead the Seasiders.  Rory Patterson came off the bench to hit three three-pointers and tally 15 points to go with five rebounds.  Marques Whippy pulled down 13 rebounds, scored nine points and made three steals for the Seasiders in the win as BYU–Hawaii improved to 6-2 for the season.

Kevin Shaw scored 19 points and Jordan Nostedt 11 to lead Simon Fraser, now 8-5 for the year.  Simon Fraser is in the process of moving from NAIA play to NCAA II and will become the first Canadian school to join the NCAA.

The Seasiders will next face Chapman on the 2nd of January in Laie at 7:30 pm HST.
