Seasiders Lose to Chaminade

Honolulu, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s basketball team suffered a heart-breaking defeat tonight on the road, losing to Chaminade 53-52 on a last-gasp three-pointer in a non-conference game.  The Seasiders took the lead with 23 seconds to play on a pair of free throws by Kristen Hartley, but the Silverswords Kellene Costello hit her third three-pointer of the night with just seconds to play to drop the Seasiders to 4-4 for the season.

BYU–Hawaii trailed by eight points in the first half before rallying to take a one-point lead, 28-27, on a three-pointer by Richelle Fenenbock at the end of the half.  The Seasiders led most of the second half, by as many as six points, but surrendered the lead to the Silverswords with just under eight minutes to play.  Chaminade led 50-48 at the 6:21 mark and the two teams then went scoreless for over five minutes until Hartley tied the score with a jumper with 1:14 to play.  In fact, the Seasiders held the Silverswords scoreless from the 6:49 mark of the second half until Costello’s game-winner.

Sophomore point guard Dara Tompkison did all she could to bring the Seasiders a win.  Tompkison scored a game-high 14 points on 5-8 shooting, pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, made a game-high five steals, and tied for the game high with four assists.  Mahina Gago added nine points and Hartley eight for the Seasiders, who shot just 37.8 percent from the field and were just 2-10 from three-point range.

Jamie Higa and Kayci Will each scored 12 points to lead Chaminade, who snapped a 54-game losing steak and are now 1-2 for the year.  The Silverswords shot 50 percent from the field and were 9-14 from beyond the arc.

BYU–Hawaii will next face UH-Hilo on Friday in Kona at 5:00 pm HST.
