Bench Sparks Win
Honolulu, HI—The seventh-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team went to the bench for help tonight and got it in a big way as the reserves scored 59 points to lead the Seasiders to a 92-75 win over Hawaii Pacific in a non-conference game at the Hawaii Challenge hosted by Chaminade University. A.J. Reilly led the way off the bench with a career-high 26 points while Rory Patterson came in to add 19 and Cory Chase ten to help the Seasiders improve to 5-1 for the season
The Seasiders, already missing national Player of the Year Lucas Alves until January, saw their leading scorer and Pacific West Conference Freshman of the Year Jet Chang leave the game in the first half with an injury after playing only nine minutes. The Seasiders trailed when Chang left the game but came back to take a two-point, 45-43, halftime lead on a three-pointer by Patterson at the end of the half.
The Sea Warriors, who led 8-0 to open the game and led by eight four time in the opening period, came back to take a three-point lead just over five minutes into the second half, but a layup by J.R. Buensuceso, a three-pointer by Patterson, and a bucket by Reilly put the Seasiders ahead to stay and they gradually pulled away for the win.
Reilly handed out a team-high six assists to go with his big scoring night and also pulled down five rebounds and made three steals. Patterson shot 5-9 from long range and Chase shot a perfect 3-3 from the field. Gary Satterwhite also played well off the bench, scoring four points and handing out three assists for the Seasiders. Buensuceso tallied 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Marques Whippy dropped in 11 points and also nabbed seven boards for BYU–Hawaii.
Mike Helton scored 22 points to lead Hawaii Pacific, now 3-3 for the year. C.J. Jackson had 16 points and a game-high 18 rebounds for the Sea Warriors.
The Seasiders will next face Chaminade in the championship game of the Hawaii Challenge hosted by Chaminade in Honolulu tomorrow at 7:30 pm HST.
