Seasiders Top DI Opponent

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s basketball team scored a landmark victory over the University of San Francisco today in the final game of the Hukilau Invitational Tournament in Laie.  The Seasiders upended the Dons 69-61 for BYU–Hawaii’s first victory over a Division I opponent since the school added women’s basketball to start the 2006-07 season.

The Seasiders earned the win with some hot shooting as they knocked down 57.1 percent of their field goal attempts for the game while the visiting Dons shot just 35.6 percent from the floor.  The Seasiders opened up a 13-point lead in the first half before San Francisco scored the last nine points of the period to cut the lead to 34-30 at halftime.  The Seasiders held tough in the second half, though, as they weathered several San Francisco runs to gain the win.

Mahina Gago scored 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Seasiders.  Mina Romito shot 5-6 from the field and tallied 13 points to go with five rebounds.  Kristen Hartley and Felisita Ika each contributed eight points and Hartley grabbed eight rebounds.  Dara Tompkison scored seven points, handed out six assists, and came up with five steals for the Seasiders.

Rheina Ale scored 18 points to lead San Francisco, now 3-7 for the year, and Katy Keating added 12 for the Dons.  Donnisha Taylor had a game-high ten rebounds in the loss.

BYU–Hawaii will next face Alaska-Fairbanks on Thursday at 7:00 pm AST in Anchorage, Alaska.
