Seasiders Tame Wildcats
Seattle, WA—The top-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team won its fourth straight game of the young season today, defeating Central Washington 94-90 at the Seattle Pacific Tournament. The Seasiders came from six points down in the second half to earn the win and improve to 4-0 for the season.
BYU–Hawaii led by as many as 12 points in the first half before the Wildcats closed to within five, 46-41, at the intermission. Central Washington took the lead in the second half and held a 71-65 lead with just over ten minutes to play in the game. The Seasiders’ J.R. Buensuceso rattled off seven straight points to put the Seasiders back on top briefly but the game was tied 83-83 with 4:51 to play. A Buensuceso free throw, followed by a Jet Chang layup and a Rory Paterson three-pointer put BYU–Hawaii in control at the 2:11 mark and the Seasiders made just enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the Wildcats.
Jet Chang scored 27 points on 11-16 shooting to lead the Seasider attack. Patterson hit 6-9 from long range to finish with 20 points and Buensuceso finished with 17. A.J. Reilly came off the bench to tally 12 points while Marques Whippy led the way on the glass with 11 rebounds to go with nine points, three steals, and three assists.
J.C. Cook scored 21 points for Central Washington, now 2-2 for the year, to lead five players in double figures. Chris Sprinker had 18, Humberto Perez 14, Roby Clyde 12, and Toussaint Tyler ten for the Wildcats in the loss. Roby had 11 rebounds for Central Washington.
The Seasiders will next face 18th-ranked Seattle Pacific tomorrow in Seattle, Washington at 7:00 pm Pacific Standard Time as the tournament concludes.
