Seasiders Defeat Mighty Oaks
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball, currently ranked number one, played their first regular season game tonight against Oakland City University. The Seasiders beat the Mighty Oaks 85-78 to start out the season with a record of 1-0.
The Mighty Oaks scored the first six points of the game. The Seasiders didn’t score until almost four minutes into the game, but quickly caught up when junior Rory Patterson scored the first field goal quickly followed by a three-pointer from sophomore Jet Chang. The Seasiders led for most of the period, but lost momentum, ending the first half 29-38. The Seasiders scored the first basket of the second half and were able to tie the score three times before finally taking and maintaining the lead for the remainder of the game. The Seasiders conquered 85-78 bringing home their first victory of the season.
Sophomore Jet Chang was the leading scorer for the Seasiders with 22 points in 34 minutes of play. Junior Marques Whippy scored 15 points, had seven rebounds, and three assists for the evening. Sophomore AJ Reilly scored 14 points and was 10-10 behind the free throw line.
Brandon Hopf had 22 points and six assists, Nathan Schumacher scored 19 points, and Craig Parks scored 14 points for the Oakland City Mighty Oaks.
The Seasiders will face the Mighty Oaks again on Saturday, November 28th at 7:30pm in Laie, HI.
