Seasiders Set Win Mark
Kaneohe, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s soccer team wrapped up a successful season today with a 3-1 victory over Hawaii Pacific in a Pacific West Conference match. The Seasiders set a new school record with their 15th win of the season, breaking the mark set last year in their conference championship season. BYU–Hawaii finished this season with a 15-3 mark overall and a 12-2 PacWest record, good for second place in the conference.
After Hawaii Pacific went ahead 1-0 on a goal by Kaua Wall in the 25th minute, the Seasiders took over the game. Margaret Sekona scored her sixth goal of the season off a rebound shot in the 36th minute to send the teams to halftime all tied at 1-1. Natasha Aiono scored the eventual game-winner in the 68th minute off a feed from Ashley Hunter. The goal was Aiono’s eighth of the season. Emily Mearns finished out the scoring with her 14th goal of the year off an assist from Sekona in the 70th minute. BYU–Hawaii goalie Becky Ploeger made the score stand up by making seven saves in the game.
Ploeger finished the season with four school records, including shutouts (10), goals-against average (.47), save percentage (.843), and goalie wins (15). As a team, the Seasiders set new marks for goals against average (.56), shots per game (19.3), and corner kicks (97). Junior Forward Emily Mearns tied her own team record, set last year, with five game-winning goals this season.
