Akinaka Scores in OT for Win

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team Academy of Art today 3-2 in overtime in a Pacific West Conference match.  The Seasiders led 2-0 at halftime only to see the Urban Knights rally to tie the match and force the overtime period.  Senior Sam Akinaka’s seventh goal of the season just 2:16 into the overtime gave the Seasiders the win.

BYU–Hawaii dominated the opening period, scoring twice and out-shooting the Urban Knights 14-3 in the half.  Kamuela Kamoe scored his first two goals of the year in the stanza, drilling home the first one off a rebound from the goalie in the 23rd minute.  He notched the second following a nice, headed pass from Collin Walch in the 33rd minute, booting it home from 12 yards out.

The Urban Knights got on the scoreboard in the 50th minute on a header by Mario Pineda off a nifty, over-the-head backwards pass from Jaime Petino-Calvo.  Although BYU–Hawaii out-shot the Urban Knights 12-7 in the second period, Academy of Art tied the game after a BYU–Hawaii mistake gave the Urban Knights the ball near midfield.  Pineda shot the ball ahead to Richard Martin who scored in the 73rd minute to send the match to overtime.

A misplayed ball kicked back towards their own goalie by the Urban Knights gave Akinaka a one-on-one opportunity and he cashed in, kicking the ball away from and past goalie Ian Sutherland and then following through and tapping the ball into the empty net.

The Seasiders finished with a 27-10 advantage in shots as they improved to 6-8-1 for the season and 5-5-1 in the PacWest.  Academy of Art is now 4-11-1 overall and 1-9 in the conference.

BYU–Hawaii will be in action again on November 3rd against UH-Hilo at 2:30 pm in Laie in another Pacific West Conference contest.
