Seasider Rally Comes Up Short
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team lost a hard-fought match to Notre Dame de Namur today 2-1 in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders trailed 2-0 at halftime but rallied in the second half before falling short.
Arturo Gomez scored in the 17th minute to put the visiting Argonauts on top early and Kellen Coffis added another score in the 38th minute to stake Notre Dame de Namur to the halftime margin. The Argonauts out-shot the Seasiders 7-2 in the opening period and at one point in the second half held a 15-5 shot advantage before BYU–Hawaii took the offensive.
Sam Akinaka scored on a breakaway following a pass from Chris Wood in the 56th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. BYU–Hawaii continued to press the attack the remainder of the period, matching the Argonauts with 13 second-half shots, to finish with just a 20-15 shot disparity for the game.
BYU–Hawaii goalie Cory Cosgrave made several outstanding saves in the second half to keep the Seasiders close. He finished with nine saves for the match.
BYU–Hawaii will be in action again on Monday against Academy of Art at 3:30 pm in Laie in another Pacific West Conference contest.
