BYUH Falls in OT
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team suffered a painful defeat today at the hands of Dixie State, falling 3-2 in double-overtime after leading 2-0 early in the second half. The Pacific West Conference loss dropped the Seasiders to 4-7-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the conference.
The two squads battled to a scoreless tie at halftime but the Seasiders broke the ice with Sam Akinaka’s fifth goal of the season in the 58th minute. Akinaka took a pass from Chris McElwee and went one-on-one with the goalie to record the score. Just five minutes later, in the 63rd minute, Jared Trussell notched his first goal of the season, from six yards out following passes from Akinaka and Viktor Bezhani.
However, Jordan Roylance, Dixie State’s leading scorer for the season, scored a hat trick to lead his team back to the win. Roylance scored in the 70th minute and again in the 89th minute on unassisted goals and then knocked in the game-winner in the 107th minute following a pass from Zac Hales to give him 11 goals for the season and send Dixie’s record to 5-6-1 overall and 3-5 in the PacWest.
BYU–Hawaii will be in action again on Thursday against Dominican at 3:30 pm in Laie in another Pacific West Conference contest.
