Seasiders Fall to Red Storm
Laie, HI—In a game worthy of conference leaders, the second-place Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s soccer team came up just short against conference leader Dixie State today, falling 1-0 in a classic Pacific West Conference battle. The Seasiders out-shot the visiting Red Storm by one, 15-14, but Dixie’s Carly Haycock got the shot that counted to give the visitors the win.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half, with BYU–Hawaii misfiring on an excellent scoring opportunity very early in the period and Seasider goalie Becky Ploeger making a pair of outstanding saves late in the opening half. Haycock broke the tie in the 56th minute when she headed a goal past Ploeger off a well-executed crossing pass from Camille Peterson.
BYU–Hawaii appeared ready to tie the game in the final minutes but Red Storm goalie Tonya Smith, who played just the second half, made a great save in a one-on-one with the Seasiders’ Margaret Sekona to preserve the win for Dixie State.
Ploeger finished the game with seven saves for BYU–Hawaii while Smith ended with three. Dixie State improved to 9-3 overall and 8-0 in the conference with the win while the Seasiders fell to 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the PacWest.
BYU–Hawaii’s next game will be on Thursday against Dominican. Game time is set for the Pacific West Conference contest at 1:00 pm in Laie.
