Seasiders Win 2-0
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s soccer team defeated Birmingham Southern 2-0 today in a non-conference match. The Seasiders scored both goals early in the first half and improved to 9-2 overall with the win.
Junior Natasha Aiono headed a ball over the Panther goalie off a free kick by Kami Strait in the tenth minute to open the scoring. It was Aiono’s fourth goal of the season and Strait’s first assist. Just 44 seconds later Tara McPartland took a pass from Emily Mearns and booted home her second goal of the season from 12 yards out. It was Mearns’ first assist of the year.
BYU–Hawaii goal keeper Becky Ploeger picked up her fourth shutout of the season without having to make a single save. The Panthers, now 7-6 for the year, managed to get off only two shots in the game, both coming in the second half, as the BYU–Hawaii defense stifled Birmingham Southern all afternoon. BYU–Hawaii finished with 19 shots in the game.
BYU–Hawaii’s next game will be on Tuesday against Dixie State. Game time is set for the important Pacific West Conference contest at 1:00 pm in Laie.
