Seasiders Win Second Straight
San Rafael, CA—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team picked up its second win a row today with a 2-1 victory over Dominican in a Pacific West Conference match on the road. The Seasiders tallied twice early in the match and held off the Penguins the rest of the way to improve to 4-6-1 for the season and 3-3-1 in the PacWest.
Chris McElwee kicked in his first goal of the season off both the goalie and the post in the 16th minute of the game to give the Seasiders the early lead. Kamuela Kamoe registered his team-leading fourth assist of the season on the play. Less than four minutes later Collin Walch booted home the eventual game-winner after moving in one-on-one with the goalie. It was Walch’s first goal of the season as well and Jared Trussell picked up his first assist of the season on the play.
Pedro Guevara scored on a penalty kick for Dominican, now 5-6-1 for the season and 2-3-1 in the conference, in the 45th minute to narrow the gap heading into halftime. However, the Seasiders kept the Penguins off the board in the second half despite being out-shot 7-4 in the period. BYU–Hawaii goalie Cory Cosgrave made a pair of fine saves late in the game to preserve the win. Cosgrave finished with four saves in the game and the teams finished with 11 shots each for the match.
BYU–Hawaii will be in action again on October 20th against Dixie State at 3:30 pm in Laie in another Pacific West Conference contest.
