Seasiders Fall in Five to Grand Canyon

Phoenix, AZ–The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s volleyball team lost to Grand Canyon tonight, 25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 15-25, 15-13, in a Pacific West Conference match.  The Seasiders staged a strong comeback after being down two sets and also rallied valiantly from a large deficit in the fifth game, but ultimately came up just a bit short.

After Grand Canyon took the first two games, BYU–Hawaii responded with by coming back from a 12-7 deficit in the third game to get back into the match.  The Seasiders then dominated game four, but fell behind 10-3 in the fifth set before storming back to tie the game at 12-12.  However, the comeback ran out of steam and the Antelopes scored three of the final four points to claim the match.

Sophomore Losaline Faka’osi pounded a match-high 17 kills to lead the Seasider attack.  Ane Vea put away ten kills and Tanza Buroker knocked down nine to go with her eight blocks.  Kylee Nawahine also notched nine kills for BYU–Hawaii.  Faka’osi and Melanie Manutai each came up with 15 digs for the Seasiders and Lacey Laycock served three aces in the match.

Whitney Estes had 14 kills and Megan Toth 11 to lead Grand Canyon, now 10-7 for the season and 1-5 in the PacWest.  Laurann Durbin had 29 digs for the Antelopes in the win.

BYU–Hawaii, now 6-9 for the year and 3-3 in the conference, will play Dixie State in St. George, Utah on Monday at 7:00 pm MDT.
