Rhoades Nets Winner
Phoenix, AZ—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s soccer team scored a tough, 1-0 win over Grand Canyon today in a Pacific West Conference match. The Seasiders’ Brenna Rhoades drilled home the only goal of the game with a kick from the right side in 74th minute of the contest to boost BYU–Hawaii to the win.
The teams played a scoreless first half with Grand Canyon getting off four shots in the period to the Seasiders’ three. BYU–Hawaii stepped up the offensive pressure in the second half, coming up with nine shots in the period to the Antelopes’ six. Rhoades took a pass from Natasha Aiono and beat a diving Grand Canyon goalie for the game-winner.
BYU–Hawaii goalie Becky Ploeger saved five shots in recording the shutout as the Seasiders improved to 5-1 for the season and 3-1 in the PacWest. Grand Canyon is now 4-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference.
BYU–Hawaii’s next game will be on Tuesday against top-ranked Seattle Pacific. Seattle Pacific had its 27-game unbeaten streak broken today by Western Washington, 3-2. Game time Tuesday for the non-conference contest is set for 1:00 pm in Seattle, Washington.
