Seasiders Lose in Five
Honolulu, HI–The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s volleyball team suffered a tough loss tonight at the hands of Hawaii Pacific in a Pacific West Conference match. The Sea Warriors prevailed in five games, 16-25, 25-18, 15-25, 25-21, 18-16 despite being out-scored by the Seasiders by six points during the match.
None of the first three games were close, with the Seasiders dominating the first and third sets and the Sea Warriors taking an easy win in game two. The fourth game was close throughout with Hawaii Pacific maintaining a slim lead most of the way. The Seasiders were within a point at 20-19 before Hawaii Pacific pulled away for the win. Game five proved to be a battle. BYU–Hawaii led 8-4 midway through the set and held a late, 13-10 lead before Hawaii Pacific scored three straight points to tie the match. Senior Ane Vea scored a kill for the Seasiders to put BYU–Hawaii at match point, but the Sea Warriors answered with a kill from Natasha Bell to tie the game at 14-14. Hawaii Pacific then failed to close out the match on two match point tries before Kelly Balanay knocked down the final two kills of the match to give the Sea Warriors the win.
Ane Vea hammered 23 kills and hit .390 to lead the Seasiders, who out-hit the Sea Warriors .181 to .120 for the match. Lacey Laycock put up 42 assists for BYU–Hawaii and came up with 13 digs as well. Losaline Faka’osi led the Seasiders with 19 digs to go with her nine kills and Melanie Manutai got 13 digs for the Seasiders. Tanza Buroker put up four blocks for BYU–Hawaii.
Bell led the Sea Warriors, now 5-6 for the year and 2-0 in the PacWest, with 18 kills while Mariana Souza had 11. Tricia Yoshimura had 23 digs for Hawaii Pacific.
BYU–Hawaii, 4-8 for the season and 1-2 in the PacWest, will face Dominican University on Wednesday at 7:00 pm in San Rafael, California in another Pacific West Conference match.
