Seasiders Bump Silverswords
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team defeated Chaminade today, 2-1, in the Pacific West Conference opener for both teams. The Seasiders, who defeated the Silverswords a week ago in the Hawaii Collegiate Challenge Cup, got off to a 2-0 lead in today’s match and held off a Chaminade rally to improve to 2-2 for the season and 1-0 in the PacWest.
Senior Adam Maciejewski notched his first goal of the season for the Seasiders in the 23rd minute when he scored on a breakaway after taking a pass from teammate Viktor Bezhani. The score gave the Seasiders the edge at the half, 1-0.
Chris Wood scored his fourth goal of the year on a similar play in the 60th minute following a pass from Kyle Young, giving the Seasiders some apparent breathing room.
Chaminade’s Charles Thompson booted one home for his third goal of the season in the 79th minute off a pass by William West. However, the comeback fell short as the BYU–Hawaii defense held the rest of the way, thanks in part to a brilliant save by Seasider goalie Cory Cosgrave on a point-blank shot that he fisted away.
Cosgrave finished with four saves in the win and his counterpart Darren Smith stopped five shots for the Silverswords as both goal keepers played well in the game. BYU–Hawaii out-shot Chaminade 14-8 in the contest.
The Seasiders will face Hawaii Pacific on Monday in Laie in a Pacific West Conference contest at 3:30 pm.
