Seasiders Sting Yellowjackets in Opener
Laie, HI–Senior outside hitter Ane Vea powered 18 kills while hitting .484 to lead the Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s volleyball team to a season-opening 3-1 win over Montana State-Billings tonight. The Seasiders got off to a shaky start, dropping the first game with just a .050 hitting percentage, but improved that percentage with each succeeding game and prevailed 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-17.
Vea, a Kahuku High grad, hit consistently throughout the match and was joined in double figures in kills by junior middle blocker Tanza Buroker who knocked down 11 with a .526 percentage and also tallied nine blocks on the night. Sophomore setter Lacey Laycock put up 44 assists to go with three blocks and four kills. Sophomore Melanie Manutai came up with 20 digs while Camille Soto added 11 and Losaline Faka’osi ten. Sophomore middle blocker Tara Huckvale came on strong late in the match to finish with eight kills for the Seasiders.
Devon Crotteau led Montana State-Billings, now 1-1, with 13 kills. Whitney Micklesen got 24 digs and Crotteau 12 for the Yellowjackets.
BYU–Hawaii will play twice tomorrow, taking on Adelphi (NY) at 11:00 am and Cal State-East Bay at 7:30 pm in Laie.
