Men Suffer Tough Loss in Opener
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team fired 13 more shots on goal today than visiting Upper Iowa, but couldn’t manage to find the net as the Seasiders lost their season opener today, 1-0, to the Peacocks. BYU–Hawaii out-shot Upper Iowa 19-6 and had many golden opportunities to score for rookie Head Coach Michael Akinaka, but fell short in the end.
Steve Kluck got the game’s only score at the 18:35 mark of the first half on a one-on-one breakaway. Despite putting up eight shots on goal in the first half to just two for the visitors, the Seasiders trailed 1-0 at the break. BYU–Hawaii lost a great opportunity in the half when a penalty kick in the 41st minute was tipped away by Upper Iowa goalie Andy Youde, who turned in nine saves in the shutout.
The second half turned out to be very frustrating for the Seasiders as they misfired on several point-blank shots and had two goals taken away by foul calls. BYU–Hawaii put up 11 shots in the period without converting for a score.
The Seasiders will take some time off before playing again on September 11th against UH-Hilo in Hilo as part of the Hawaii Collegiate Challenge Cup Tournament.
