Women's Soccer Opens with Win
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s soccer team opened the new season with a 3-0 victory over Upper Iowa today, making a winner out of rookie Head Coach Carolyn Theurer in her debut at the helm of the Seasiders. BYU–Hawaii dominated the action throughout the match, out-shooting the visiting Peacocks 20-2, and tallied twice in the opening 16 minutes to take control of the game.
Sophomore Britt Edman took a nice crossing pass from Lauren McCullough and booted it in from the left side just 5:24 into the match to put the Seasiders on top 1-0. Freshman Rachel Johnson also picked up an assist on the play.
Just over ten minutes later, freshman Chloe Ence scored the first goal of her BYU–Hawaii career, as she beat the Peacock defense and dribbled in one-on-one against Upper Iowa goalie Melissa Heitzman and beat her with a solid kick into the goal to give the Seasiders a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Despite ten shots on goal in the second period, the Seasiders didn’t score until sophomore Natalie Cude drilled a penalty kick into the left side of the net at the 77:55 mark for the final score of the game. BYU–Hawaii goalie Becky Ploeger made both her saves in the game during the second half to register the shutout.
BYU–Hawaii’s next action will be on Saturday against Westminster College (UT). Game time is set for 1:00 pm on the BYU–Hawaii Soccer Field.
