Akinaka Named New Coach
Laie, HI—Brigham Young University-Hawaii has named former Seasider soccer player and assistant coach Michael Akinaka as the Head Coach for its men’s soccer team. Akinaka, who was a Pacific West Conference Second Team midfielder for the Seasiders in 2006 and All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2007, spent last season as an assistant coach for BYU–Hawaii.
Akinaka, from Haiku, Maui, graduated from BYU–Hawaii in 2007 and is currently employed as a teacher at Kahuku Elementary School. He replaces Jeff Miller as coach of the Seasiders following Miller’s move to Arizona.
Akinaka served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Ecuador from 2002 to 2004 prior to returning to play at BYU-Hawaii. He and his wife Jamie have two children and reside in Laie.
