Seasiders Lose Doubleheader
Phoenix, AZ—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s softball team lost both ends of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader today to Grand Canyon on the road. The Seasiders dropped the first game 9-2 and fell in the second game 17-7 on the eight-run rule after Grand Canyon scored ten runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 7-7-7 tie and claim the win.
Freshman Lauren Fielding, from nearby Mesa, Arizona, provided the offense for the Seasiders in the opening game, hitting her first home run of the season to drive in Melissa Lehano in the top of the fifth inning after the hosts had taken a nine-run lead with four runs in the third and five more in the fourth. Grand Canyon got two home runs and seven RBI’s in the game from Randi Johns.
In the second game, BYU–Hawaii rallied from a 4-0 deficit with five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a brief, 5-4 lead. Ivy Sessions led off the inning with a single and Kahealani Alohikea-Betham followed with another single. After a pair of outs, April Jorgensen walked to load the bases and Brooke Perriton singled home the first run of the inning. Tina Moen followed with a two RBI single up the middle and Melissa Lehano drove home the final two runs of the inning with a triple down the right field line.
Grand Canyon came right back with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game, but Sessions led off the fifth inning with a double and scored an out later on an RBI single by Kim Artiaga. Artiaga moved to second on the throw home and came around to score on a Morgan Necaise single. However, the rally died with the bases loaded, but the Seasiders led 7-5.
The Antelopes came back again with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game at 7-7 and then exploded to score ten runs in the sixth inning, with no outs being recorded, to put the game away. Tracy Lubken led off the inning with a home run and ended the inning with another home run, a three run shot and her third homer and eighth RBI of the game.
With the losses, BYU–Hawaii moves to 12-24 for the season and 5-13 in the PacWest while Grand Canyon is now 29-17 overall and 12-7 in the conference.
BYU–Hawaii will face Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday in Belmont, California in a PacWest doubleheader.
