Seasiders Split with #18 Dixie

St. George, UT—Brigham Young University Hawaii pitcher Katresha Veazie pitched a one-hitter as the Seasider women’s softball team defeated 18th-ranked Dixie State 3-1 on the road today in the first game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader.  The Red Storm came back to take the second game 6-0 behind a no-hitter by Lauren Folta.

Veazie struck out five and walked four in pitching her gem against the powerful Dixie State lineup.  She allowed only a solo home run in the fourth inning.  BYU–Hawaii opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the second on a Brooke Perriton sacrifice fly that scored Morgan Necaise.  The Seasiders added another run in the top of the third when Melissa Lehano singled to lead off the inning, was sacrificed to second, and scored with two outs on an RBI single by Kahealani Alohikea-Betham.  BYU–Hawaii scored a final time in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Ashley Parry that plated Danielle Bahr who was pinch-running for Veazie after Veazie helped her own cause with a leadoff single.

Folta stymied the Seasiders in the second game, striking out nine and allowing just a pair of walks and a hit batter.  She did not allow a runner past first base in the game.  Dixie had nine hits in the game and scored twice in the first and third and once in the second and sixth innings.

With the split, BYU–Hawaii moves to 12-22 for the season and 5-11 in the PacWest while Dixie State is now 28-6 overall and 17-5 in the conference.

BYU–Hawaii will face Grand Canyon on Monday in Phoenix, Arizona in a PacWest doubleheader.
