Alves, Five Others Honored by Conference

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii junior forward Lucas Alves has been named the Pacific West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year for the second year in a row.  Alves heads the PacWest All-Conference First Team released today.  He was named earlier this week as the Daktronics NCAA II Player of the Year and a Daktronics First Team All-American and was also honored on the All-Region All-Academic Team.

BYU–Hawaii placed four players on the All-Conference Second Team including seniors Nathan Sims and Trenson Akana, junior J.R. Buensuceso, and sophomore Marques Whippy.  Additionally, BYU–Hawaii freshman Jet Chang was named the PacWest Freshman of the Year.

Alves, a 6-9 forward from Casa Branca, Brazil, led the Pacific West Conference in scoring at 19.8 points per game.  He also averaged 7.5 rebounds per game and shot 52.7 percent from the field for the season while playing just 27 minutes per game.  He was named PacWest Player of the Week three times this season.

Sims, a 6-3 guard from Sky Valley, California, averaged 12.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game and shot 56.6 percent from the field.  He was named PacWest Player of the Week once this past season.  Akana, a 5-10 guard from Kaunakaka’i, Molokai, Hawaii, averaged 12.4 points per game and shot 48.4 percent from three-point range to finish second in the nation.  Buensuceso, a 5-9 guard from Eagle Rock, California, averaged 11.4 points per game and led the PacWest with six assists per game.  He was one of only two NCAA II players chosen as finalists for the Cousy Award given to the nation’s best point guard.  Whippy, a 6-5 forward from Bua, Fiji, averaged 8.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and led the PacWest with 2.29 steals per game while playing only 20.4 minutes per contest.  Whippy shot 59.8 percent from the field this year.  Chang averaged 12.3 points per game while also playing just 20.4 minutes per contest.  None of the Seasider players honored averaged more than 27.1 minutes per game this year.
