Alohikea-Betham Walkoff Homer Paces Win

Laie, HI-Kahealani Alohikea-Betham blasted a walkoff homerun to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning to the give the Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s softball team a thrilling, come-from-behind victory in the opening game of a non-conference doubleheader against Academy of Art today in Laie.  Alohikea-Betham’s blast gave the Seasiders a 2-1 win and made a winner of BYU–Hawaii pitcher Katresha Veazie.  Academy of Art took the second game 2-0.

Veazie kept the visiting Urban Knights at bay through a scoreless tie for six innings before Academy of Art broke through with a pair of hits and the game’s first run in the top of the seventh.  However, the Seasiders, who had managed just a pair of hits themselves through the first six innings, got a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh from Morgan Necaise.  Athena Salinas pinch-ran for Necaise and came around to score on a pair of wild pitches to send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth the Urban Knights led off with a pair of singles to put runners on first and second with no outs.  Leadoff hitter Nicole Palmer then lashed a sharp line drive to right field that appeared to be a hit.  But BYU–Hawaii right-fielder Ashley Parry made a great, shoestring catch and fired the ball to first base to double off the runner.  Veazie induced a groundout to end the inning and set the stage for Alohikea-Betham’s game-winning blast, her fifth homer of the season.

In game two, the Urban Knight’s Sierrah Garcia shut down the Seasiders on four hits, all singles, and Academy of Art scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth for the win.

The same two teams will meet on Wednesday in Laie for another doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
