Seasiders Complete Season at 25-1, Await Regional Tournament

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team completed the best regular season in school history tonight by defeating Hawaii Pacific 107-70 in a non-conference game on Senior Night.  The Seasiders dominated the game from start to finish to improve to 25-1 for the season and a perfect 12-0 in the Pacific West Conference.  BYU–Hawaii has won 22 consecutive games, a school record.

BYU–Hawaii scored the first points of the game on a three-pointer by senior Trenson Akana just 15 seconds into the game and raced away to a 57-36 halftime lead by shooting 70.4 percent from the field in the opening period.  The Seasiders cooled slightly in the second half to finish the game at 62.7 percent and led by as many as 41 points as they cruised to the win.  

Junior Lucas Alves scored 18 points and pulled down ten rebounds to lead the Seasiders.  He also blocked four shots.  Senior Nathan Sims tallied 15 points and was a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line for the second night in a row.  Sims also dished out five assists in the game.  Junior J.R. Buensuceso hit five three-pointers to finish with 15 points and Akana hit three from beyond the arc and finished with 11 points and five assists.  Jet Chang came off the bench for 11 points and hit two of BYU–Hawaii’s 14 three-pointers in the game.  Marques Whippy was a perfect 3-3 from the field, including a three-pointer, to tally nine points to go with seven rebounds and a team-high six assists.  Senior Jermaine Odjegba went 4-4 from the field for eight points to go with four rebounds and Nick Holladay hit a pair from long range and finished with eight points.  A.J. Reilly handed out four of the Seasiders’ 31 assists and grabbed four rebounds in the win.

Rishi Kakad had 18 points, Misha Radojevic 12, and Jason Curtis ten for Hawaii Pacific.  The Sea Warriors finish the season at 9-17 overall and 3-9 in the PacWest.

Following the game, Akana, Odjegba, and Sims, the three seniors on this year’s squad were honored by their teammates and Seasider fans.

BYU–Hawaii will await the NCAA II West Regional Tournament pairings that will be announced tomorrow.  It is expected that the Seasiders will be hosting one of two sub-regionals beginning on Friday.
