Seasiders Battle Powerful Lock Haven

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team battled national power Lock Haven to a near standstill in the opening game of a non-conference doubleheader today before falling to the Bald Eagles in a squeaker, 1-0.  The Bald Eagles showed why they were ranked number one nationally in the pre-season rankings by taking the second game 8-0 on the eight-run rule after six innings.

BYU–Hawaii pitcher Katresha Veazie, in another strong outing for the Seasiders, limited Lock Haven to just two hits in the opening game but one of those two proved to be the decisive blow in the game.  With two out in the top of the third, Nancy O’Connor drew a walk from Veazie and stole second.  Leadoff hitter Ilia Lopez then drilled a double to right to score O’Connor with the games only run.  The only other hit off Veazie was a single in the fourth inning as she kept the Bald Eagles off balance throughout the game, striking out seven and walking two.

The Seasiders banged out five hits, all singles, off Lock Haven pitcher Kristin Erb, but couldn’t put enough of them together to score a run.  Each of the BYU–Hawaii hits came in different innings and the Seasiders only advanced a runner as far as third base in the fourth inning when Ivy Sessions led off with a single, stole second, and, following a walk to Morgan Necaise, was sacrificed to third by Veazie for the second out.  However, Erb induced a grounder back to the mound to end the threat.

Erb was the story in the second game as she pitched her second complete game of the day and threw a no-hitter at the Seasiders.  She struck out six and walked one in keeping the Seasiders frustrated at the plate.  Meanwhile her teammates banged out 13 hits including a pair of two run home runs, the first by Lopez in the fourth inning and the second by Sarah Norris in the sixth.

The Seasiders, now 7-13 for the year, will face Hawaii Pacific in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader on Saturday in Kaneohe beginning at 12:00 pm.
