Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team defeated Grand Canyon today in both ends of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader.  The Seasiders took the first game 5-4 and came back to win the second contest 6-2 to improve to 3-3 in the PacWest and 7-11 overall.

BYU–Hawaii opened the scoring in game one with a single run in the bottom of the second when Kahealani Alohikea-Betham drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Katresha Veazie, and scored on a single down the right field line by Kaila Anderson.  Grand Canyon tied the score with an unearned run in the top of the third but Melissa Lehano put the Seasiders on top to stay with a solo home run, her second of the year, to left field to lead off the bottom of the third.  The Seasiders tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth highlighted by a two-run single by Lauren Fielding and a sacrifice fly by Ivy Sessions.

The Lady Antelopes rallied in the top of the sixth off Veazie, who went the distance for the Seasiders to improve to 4-4 for the season.  Grand Canyon put together four hits and a walk to pull within a run before Veazie induced a ground ball back to the mound to end the inning with runners stranded on second and third.

Brooke Perriton singled home two runs for the Seasiders in the bottom of the second inning of game two to stake Julianne Tialavea to an early lead.  Tialavea scattered eight hits in going the distance on the mound for BYU–Hawaii and improved to 3-7 for the season.  Grand Canyon scored a single run in the third to pull within one but the Seasiders put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Morgan Necaise started the fourth-inning rally for the Seasiders with a double to left center.  Perriton followed with a single and went to second on the throw home that held Necaise at third.  Lehano then drilled a single through the right side that scored both runners and she advanced to second on the throw home.  Following a strikeout, Sessions singled up the middle and went to second on a throw home to hold Lehano at third.  However, the subsequent throw to second in a failed attempt to get Sessions allowed Lehano to score.  Alohikea-Betham singled to score Sessions with the final run of the inning.  Grand Canyon scored a final run in the top of the fifth but Tialavea held on for the win.

Lehano had a big day at the plate for the Seasiders, going 5-7 with three runs scored, three RBI’s, and the homer.  Sessions went 3-6 to raise her team-leading batting average to .427 for the year.  Perriton went 3-5 with two runs scored and two RBI’s while Fielding and Kim Artiaga each banged out three hits as well.

The Seasiders will face Lock Haven, ranked number one nationally in the pre-season poll, in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday in Laie beginning at 1:00 pm.
