Seasiders Streak to 20 with Close Win
Honolulu, HI—Freshman Jet Chang scored 24 of his game-high 32 points in the second half to lead the third-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team to a thrilling, come-from-behind, 97-94 victory over Chaminade tonight in a non-conference game in Honolulu. With the win, the Seasiders extended their school-record winning streak to 20 games and improved to 23-1 for the season.
With Trenson Akana and Marques Whippy suspended for one game for BYU–Hawaii and three players suspended from Chaminade’s roster for the game as a result of last night’s game in Laie, each team knew that someone would have to step up to fill the void in tonight’s contest. Players from both teams did just that, performing well in a challenging situation, but perhaps none better than the freshman from Taiwan. Chang, starting the game in place of Akana, hit his first two shots of the night, both three-pointers, to stake the Seasiders to an early five-point lead. However, the Silverswords, with just six players in uniform, responded to the challenge and came back to take a 43-41 halftime lead.
In a game that saw 13 ties and 17 lead changes, the Silverswords managed to hold the largest lead of the game at seven points, 69-62, with just over 12 minutes to play in the game when Chang personally erased the deficit and gave BYU–Hawaii the lead by scoring eight straight points. Once again, Chaminade battled back and the two PacWest powers exchanged leads and ties until the Silverswords led by five, 86-81, with just 3:15 to play.
Once again, Chang nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to two and then Lucas Alves, who was limited by foul trouble to just 18 minutes in the game, connected on a jumper off an assist by Chang to knot the game. Alves was fouled on the play and made the ensuing free throw to put the Seasiders ahead to stay, 87-86. A pair of free throws by A.J. Reilly and a layup by Chang put BYU–Hawaii ahead by six and the Seasiders hit their free throws down the stretch, including four more by Reilly, to secure the win.
Chang hit 13-22 from the field and 4-6 from three point range as the Seasiders shot 51.5 percent from the floor and 53.3 (8-15) from long range. Alves, despite the short playing time, finished with 18 points on 6-10 shooting from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line. Nate Sims tallied 13 points and led the Seasiders with six rebounds. Reilly, who finished 7-7 from the line, added 13 points and Jermaine Odjegba chipped in ten points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks in a fine performance before fouling out late in the game. J.R. Buensuceso handed out eight assists and added seven points and Garrett Sandberg came off the bench to add four points and three rebounds in a solid performance in the absence of Whippy.
Noah Gottlieb had 25 points, Joel Smith 24, Mohamed Tangara 22, and Rickey Clayborn 17 for the Silverswords, now 14-11 for the season. Clayborn also had ten rebounds in a strong game and Tangara got nine as Chaminade out-rebounded the Seasiders 39-30. Smith got seven assists in the loss.
BYU–Hawaii will face Hawaii Pacific on Friday night in Laie at 7:30 pm in a Pacific West Conference game.
