Seasiders Outlast Chaminade

Laie, HI—The third-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team extended its school-record winning streak to 19 games tonight with an extremely physical 109-104 non-conference win over Chaminade that saw 59 fouls called in the game and four players ejected.  The Seasiders, now 22-1 for the season and still 11-0 in the PacWest, overcame a 53-51 halftime deficit and a subpar shooting night to defeat the Silverswords for the third time this season.

The Seasiders led by as many as 13 points in the opening half at 21-8 before Chaminade used a 9-0 run to knot the score at 28-28.  The Silverswords then surged ahead by as many as eight points before the Seasiders tied the game at 51-51 on a three-pointer by Trenson Akana late in the half.  Jamar Berry beat the buzzer with a jumper to give the Silverswords the halftime edge.

Chaminade built the lead after halftime to five points two-and-a-half minutes in to the second period before a three-pointer by J.R. Buensuceso and a jumper by Lucas Alves tied the game at 63-63.  A three-pointer by Alves just over four minutes into the half gave the Seasiders the lead for good at 66-63 but the Silverswords continued to keep the game in doubt right to the end.

With just under four minutes to play in the game a brief skirmish between the two teams near the Chaminade bench resulted in the four ejections.  Seasiders Akana and Marques Whippy were tossed from the game by the officials as were the Silverswords’ Berry and Cartier Carter.

Alves scored 28 points to lead all scorers and also grabbed eight rebounds in the win.  Whippy and Nate Sims each tallied 17 points to go with eight rebounds each and Whippy came up with four steals.  Akana finished with 15 points, including three three-pointers while also getting seven rebounds and Buensuceso knocked down 14 points to go with seven assists.  Jet Chang added nine points off the bench.

Berry had 21 points, Carter 19, Joel Smith 14, Darrell Birton 13, and Patrick Collier ten for the Silverswords, now 14-10 for the season and still 7-4 in the conference.  Smith also had 12 rebounds and Birton got seven assists in the loss.

BYU–Hawaii will face Chaminade again tomorrow in Honolulu at 7:30 pm in a non-conference game.
