Seasiders Stay Atop Regional Poll
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team continued to hold on to the top spot in the NCAA II West Regional poll released today by the NCAA. The Seasiders, 21-1 for the season and ranked third nationally in the coach’s poll, are undefeated at 15-0 in the West Region, although this week’s win against Grand Canyon was not included in the records used for the voting. The regional poll ultimately determines which teams make the post-season and where the regional tournament will be played.
Normally the top eight teams in the region at the end of the season will get invitations to the regional and the host team will be the highest ranked team that puts in an acceptable bid to host the tournament. However, this season the NCAA has instituted a rule for Division II play that if all seven of the non-hosting teams would be required to travel by air to the host location or if a significant financial cost would be involved, the regional tournament could be split into to four-team sub-regionals. The two sub-regional winners would then play a regional championship game at the site of the highest remaining seed.
This scenario makes the inclusion of Chaminade in the number eight spot in the rankings significant to BYU–Hawaii. If Chaminade remains in the rankings and the Seasiders continue to hold the top spot, BYU–Hawaii would host the entire regional. However, if Chaminade drops out of the top eight by the end of the season, the regional tournament would be split into two sub-regionals.
The Seasiders, who now own the longest winning streak in school history at 18 straight wins, will face Chaminade twice this weekend. The first game, on Friday, will be played in Laie with Saturday’s game being played in Honolulu. Both games are slated to begin at 7:30 pm HST.
