Winning Streak Hits 18

Phoenix, AZ—The third-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team extended its school-record winning streak to 18 games tonight with an 86-71 victory over Grand Canyon in a Pacific West Conference game on the road.  The Seasiders, now 21-1 for the season and 11-0 in the PacWest, had to overcome losing PacWest Player of the Year Lucas Alves to fouls early in the second half amidst a strong comeback by the Antelopes, but got strong contributions from several players to pull away to the win.

The Seasiders led by as many as 12 points in the opening half before taking a 43-35 lead into the locker room at halftime.  But Grand Canyon came out battling in the second half and cut the lead to just two points, at 47-45, just over four minutes into the half.  That’s when things took a turn to the worse for the Seasiders.  Alves, who had just picked up his third foul of the game moments earlier, drove inside and was involved in a collision with the Antelope’s David Cuen.  The official on the play called a double foul on the two players and Alves subsequently received a technical foul to put him out of the game.  After the free throws were shot, the Seasiders were clinging to a one-point lead with their leading scorer out of action for the night.

Grand Canyon took advantage of the situation quickly, scoring the next basket on an inside jumper by center Engen Nurumbi to take a 50-49 lead.  After a layup by Jet Chang and a jumper by Jermaine Odjegba put the Seasiders up by three, Shansan Chambers hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 55-55 with 11:13 to play and the home crowd sensing an upset.

However, the Seasiders regrouped and took charge of the game.  A pair of free throws by Trenson Akana and two more from A.J. Reilly put BYU–Hawaii back on top by four and, after a Grand Canyon score, Marques Whippy scored on a putback then stole the ball and Akana hit one of his three three-pointers for the game to extend the lead to seven at 64-57.  From that point the Seasiders continued to extend the lead to as many as 18 points before closing out to the 15-point win.

Akana finished with 15 points as one of four Seasiders in double figures.  Nathan Sims tallied 12 while Chang and Odjegba each notched 11.  Alves, J.R. Buensuceso, and Reilly each scored nine points and Whippy chipped in eight for BYU–Hawaii.  Whippy and Odjegba each grabbed eight rebounds and Sims six to lead the Seasiders to a 43-36 advantage on the boards.  Buensuceso, Whippy, and Reilly each handed out three assists in the game and Whippy came up with four steals.  Sims and Reilly each had two steals apiece for the Seasiders.

Cuen had 20 points, Chambers 17, and Nurumbi 14 for the Antelopes, now 13-12 for the season and 5-6 in the conference.

BYU–Hawaii will come home to face Chaminade on Friday in Laie at 7:30 pm in a non-conference game.
