Seasiders Earn Split with Clan

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team defeated Simon Fraser 9-1 today in the opening game of a doubleheader before falling short in a seventh-inning rally in game two, losing 5-2.  With the split in the twinbill, the Seasiders move to 2-4 for the season.

Katresha Veazie scattered four hits over six innings in the first game to pick up the complete game win for the Seasiders.  Veazie struck out three and yielded only a third-inning run to the visiting Clan from Canada.  The BYU–Hawaii bats backed her with ten hits, including two apiece from Melissa Lehano, Kahealani Alohikea-Betham, and Ashley Parry.

The Seasiders opened the scoring in the bottom of the first after a leadoff single by Lehano.  A pair of Simon Fraser errors and a sacrifice fly by Veazie gave BYU–Hawaii a 2-0 lead.  The Seasiders added five more in the fourth, putting together five hits and another Clan error to take a commanding 7-1 lead.  Parry smacked a two-run single in the inning.

Lehano drove in the eighth run for the Seasiders with a sacrifice fly in foul territory down the right field line in the fifth inning that brought home April Jorgensen, who had led off the inning with a single.  In the bottom of the sixth inning Ivy Sessions led off with a single for the Seasiders and, with one out, scored on a single by Alohikea-Betham to end the game on the eight-run rule.

BYU–Hawaii struggled at the plate in game two as Clan hurler Jennifer Van Egdom took a perfect game into the sixth inning.  Tina Moen broke up the perfect game with a two-out single in the sixth and the Seasiders broke through for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh before the rally panned out.  Lauren Fielding hit a one-out single for BYU–Hawaii and came home on a single by Alohikea-Betham.  Veazie then drove in Alohikea-Betham with a double to right field but was left stranded on the bases.  Simon Fraser scored three runs in the third and a pair of unearned runs in the fourth before Veazie came in to relieve starter Julianne Tialavea and shut down the Clan the rest of the game.

Alohikea-Betham finished the day for BYU–Hawaii with three hits, two runs scored, and three RBI’s.  Fielding scored three runs for the Seasiders and collected a pair of hits in the twinbill.

The Seasiders will face Hawaii Pacific tomorrow in Kaneohe in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
