Seasiders Make it 14 in a Row

Hilo, HI—The third-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team went on the road and won its 14th straight game tonight, defeating UH-Hilo in a Pacific West Conference game, 83-71.  Junior Lucas Alves scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and the Seasiders held off a Vulcan rally to improve to 17-1 for the season and 8-0 in the PacWest.

BYU–Hawaii broke open a close game in the first half to take a 45-35 lead into the locker room.  The Seasiders led by double digits for most of the second half but the Vulcans battled hard to the end.  BYU–Hawaii sealed the game with free throws down the stretch.

In addition to his scoring and rebounding, Alves excelled defensively by blocking four shots in the game.  Jermaine Odjegba joined Alves in double figures, scoring 12 points to go with four rebounds.  J.R. Buensuceso added nine points and three steals while four other Seasiders, Trenson Akana, Nate Sims, A.J. Reilly, and Jet Chang, scored eight points each.  Sims pulled down nine rebounds including four on the offensive end for the Seasiders.

Charlando Brown, Jay DeMaestri, and Jacob Briggs each scored 15 points to lead UH-Hilo, now 11-9 for the season and 4-5 in the conference.  John Smith and Bryan Ngo each had ten for the Vulcans and DeMaestri had ten rebounds.

The 14-game winning streak matches the second-longest such streak in Seasider men’s basketball history.  The 1991-92 team won 15 straight and the 2003-04 team won 14 straight.  BYU–Hawaii will get a chance to match that 1991-92 team tomorrow night in a non-conference game against UH-Hilo at 7:30 pm.
