Seasiders Win 13th Straight
Laie, HI—The fourth-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team won its 13th straight game tonight, defeating Grand Canyon in a Pacific West Conference game, 101-81. The Seasiders improved to 16-1 for the season and 7-0 in the PacWest behind a balanced attack that featured six players in double figures as they opened up a 25-point halftime lead and cruised to the win.
BYU–Hawaii shot 76.2 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes to put the game out of reach. The Seasiders, who lead the nation in field goal percentage, cooled off in the second half to finish at 55.4 percent for the game. Senior Trenson Akana came off the bench to score 17 points, including 2-3 from the three-point line, to lead the scoring parade for the Seasiders. Jet Chang scored 15, Lucas Alves and Nate Sims 14 apiece, and J.R. Buensuceso and Marques Whippy 11 each in the win. Garrett Sandberg tallied eight points off the bench and came up with five rebounds. Whippy led the team on the boards with seven rebounds and Sims snared six. Buensuceso, who earlier in the day was recognized as a finalist for the Cousy Award given to the nation’s top point guard, handed out eight assists and made six steals in just 26 minutes of play.
Eric Cuen scored 18 points to lead Grand Canyon, now 10-10 for the season and 3-4 in the conference. Shansan Chambers had 17, Engen Nurumbi 14, and Brandon Dempster 12 in the loss. Cuen also had 11 rebounds in the game.
The 13-game winning streak is the third-longest such streak in Seasider men’s basketball history. The 1991-92 team won 15 straight and the 2003-04 team won 14 straight. BYU–Hawaii will get a chance to add to the streak as they go on the road to face UH-Hilo in a Pacific West Conference game in Hilo on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
