BYU-Hawaii Sets Record for Best Start
Laie, HI—The fourth-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated a determined Chaminade squad tonight, 96-81, in an important Pacific West Conference game. With the win, the Seasiders set a new standard for the best start to a season with a 14-1 mark, surpassing the 13-1 start by the 1993-94 team. The first half of tonight’s game was a back-and-forth struggle marked by five ties and nine lead changes. Although the Silverswords cut the lead to one on two occasions early in the second half, the Seasiders maintained the lead throughout the second period and, as they found their shooting rhythm, gradually extended the lead to as many as 16 points. Chaminade made a run to cut the lead to nine with just over five minutes left, but the Seasiders’ J.R. Buensuceso responded with a three-pointer and BYU–Hawaii kept a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Junior Lucas Alves shot 8-15 from the floor after a slow start and finished with 18 points, ten rebounds, and four assists to lead the BYU–Hawaii attack. Nate Sims and Trenson Akana each tallied 15 points for the Seasiders and the 5’10” Akana came up with nine rebounds to go with four assists. Jet Chang came off the bench to join all five BYU–Hawaii starters in double figures with 13 points. Buensuceso scored 12 points and dished out ten assists to join Alves with a double-double and Marques Whippy contributed ten points and six rebounds. Jermaine Odjegba added seven points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals off the bench and A.J. Reilly came in for six points and four assists in the win. BYU–Hawaii shot 45.7 percent from the floor in the first half but came back with 57.6 percent in the second period to finish the game at 51.5 percent to Chaminade’s 46.4 percent. The Seasiders also out-rebounded the Silverswords 45-31 for the game.
Mohamed Tangara had a double-double for Chaminade with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Noah Gottlieb scored 16 and both Darrell Birton and Patrick Collier added 12 for the Silverswords, who fell to 9-8 for the season and 5-3 in the PacWest.
