Seasiders Match Best Start in History
Laie, HI—The fifth-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team ran away from Academy of Art tonight, defeating the visiting Urban Knights 107-60 to improve to 13-1 for the season. The 13-1 record matches the best start in BYU–Hawaii history, set previously during the 1993-94 season.
The Seasiders scored the first ten points of tonight’s game to set the tone for the night and built a 67-28 halftime lead by shooting 65.7 percent (23-35) from the field and 50 percent (6-12) from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes. The Seasiders made 12 steals and forced 20 turnovers in the first half as they totally dominated the first-year Urban Knights. BYU–Hawaii used bench players predominantly in the second half as no starter played more than 23 minutes.
Junior Lucas Alves shot 9-13 from the floor and finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks in just 22 minutes of action to lead the BYU–Hawaii attack. Nate Sims scored 16 points and dished out six assists in his 20 minutes and J.R. Buensuceso tallied 13 points and dealt out ten assists in 23 minutes. All ten of his assists came in the opening half. Trenson Akana hit four three-pointers and scored 14 points and Garrett Sandberg came off the bench for 11 points and six rebounds. Marques Whippy added nine points, six rebounds, and four steals for the Seasiders while Jet Chang and Nick Holladay each scored eight points. A.J. Reilly handed out eight assists as BYU–Hawaii recorded 31 assists for the game.
Hayden Hunter scored 16 points, Marqus Crawford 14, and Phillip Samuels 13 to lead Academy of Art, now 3-17 for the season. Sebastian Vos, son of former BYU–Hawaii player Paul Vos, scored nine points off the bench for the Urban Knights.
The 13-1 record after 14 games was set by a 1993-94 team that ended up losing seven of its last eight games and finishing the season at 22-10. One other early season streak by the Seasiders is worth noting. The 2003-04 team started 16-2 with both losses coming in the first three games of the season to NCAA Division I teams. The Seasiders did not lose to a Division II team that season until a loss at UH-Hilo on February 3rd.
BYU–Hawaii will face Chaminade in a PacWest Conference game in Laie on Thursday at 7:30 pm.
