Seasiders Keep Winning
Honolulu, HI—The fifth-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team defeated Hawaii Pacific tonight, 72-54, in a non-conference game to improve to 12-1 for the season. The Seasiders won despite shooting well below their NCAA II-leading field goal and three-point percentages as they shot just 43.9 percent from the field and only 23.5 percent from beyond the arc.
The Seasiders threatened to run the Sea Warriors out of the gym to start the game, racing away to a 31-10 lead in the first 12 minutes of the game. But the Sea Warriors closed the first half with a 17-2 run to trail by just three, 38-35, at the break. Hawaii Pacific opened the second half with a three-pointer to tie the score and complete the improbable comeback, but the Seasiders quickly regained the lead and steadily pulled away in the second half for the win.
Freshman Jet Chang scored 15 points to lead a balanced BYU–Hawaii attack. Lucas Alves dropped in 13 points to go with a game-high 12 rebounds while Nate Sims and Trenson Akana each added 12 points. J.R. Buensuceso tallied nine points and handed out six assists while Marques Whippy scored six points, grabbed five rebounds, and made five steals. Jermaine Odjegba added four points, seven rebounds, and three blocks for the Seasiders.
Jeff Ingram scored 18 points to lead Hawaii Pacific, now 7-8 overall. Cliff Hodge had 16 points and Jason Curtis 12 for the Sea Warriors.
BYU–Hawaii will face Academy of Art in a non-conference game in Laie on Monday at 7:30 pm.
