Hot Shooting Leads Seasiders Over Silverswords
Honolulu, HI—The eighth-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team won its seventh straight game tonight, defeating Chaminade 105-97, to improve to 3-0 in the Pacific West Conference and 10-1 overall. The Seasiders shot 58 percent from the field in taking a 57-44 halftime lead, extended the lead to as many as 19 points in the second half, and then withstood a furious Chaminade rally to claim the win.
BYU–Hawaii led by 19 points, 96-77, after a Jermaine Odjegba jumper with just 5:15 to play in the game and still held a 16-point lead, 100-84, after a pair of Odjegba free throws with 2:08 remaining. But the Silverswords staged a comeback and cut the lead to just six points at 103-97 with 26 seconds left before the Seasiders closed out the win. BYU–Hawaii helped the Silverswords get back in the game by missing seven of ten free throws in the final 1:43 of playing time.
The Seasiders shot 57. 1 percent from the field for the game and 44.4 percent from three-point range. BYU–Hawaii also out-rebounded Chaminade 46-33. The teams combined to hit 19 three-pointers in the game.
Junior center Lucas Alves scored 28 points, 18 of them in the opening half, and pulled down six rebounds to lead the Seasiders. Senior Nate Sims dropped in 15 points and added nine rebounds off the bench while junior J.R. Buensuceso tallied 18 points and dished out ten assists for a double-double. Sophomore Marques Whippy tallied ten points and matched Sims with nine rebounds. Odjegba finished with 12 points and two blocked shots and Trenson Akana reached double digits with ten points. Jet Chang added nine points and four rebounds and A.J. Reilly contributed nine assists and four rebounds.
Darrell Birton hit seven three-pointers and scored 27 points to lead Chaminade, now 6-7 for the season and 3-2 in the PacWest. Joel Smith scored 18, Cartier Carter 15, Jamar Berry 13, and Rickey Clayborn 12 in the loss. Noah Gottlieb had nine assists for the Silverswords.
BYU–Hawaii will face Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday in Laie at 7:30 pm in a Pacific West Conference game.
