Seasiders Scorch Sea Warriors

Honolulu, HI—The ninth-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team took off on a 13-0 run to pull away from a 4-4 tie early in the first half and dominated Hawaii Pacific tonight, 93-71, in a Pacific West Conference game.  The Seasiders, now 9-1 for the season and 2-0 in the PacWest, led 60-30 at halftime behind J.R. Buensuceso’s 16 first-half points and coasted to the win.

The Seasiders shot a blistering 24-35 (68.6%) from the field in the opening half and finished the game at 57.1 percent from the floor and 50 percent from long range on 8-16 shooting.  Hawaii Pacific shot just 36.4 percent from the floor in the first half, 42.4 percent for the game, and was only 3-22 (13.6%) from three-point range in the contest.  BYU–Hawaii also dominated the boards, winning the rebound battle 42-24.

Buensuceso and Trenson Akana led the Seasider attack with 16 points each and four other Seasiders finished in double figures in scoring.  Marques Whippy tallied 12 points to go with his game-high 11 rebounds and his three assists and two steals.  Jermaine Odjegba, Lucas Alves, and Nate Sims each dropped in 11 points and Alves grabbed eight rebounds.  A.J. Reilly came off the bench to score seven points and dished out a team-high four assists to complement his two steals.

Rishi Kakad came off the bench to score 22 points to lead Hawaii Pacific, now 6-5 for the season and 0-2 in the PacWest.  Jeff Ingram had 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds for the Sea Warriors and Jason Curtis scored ten points.

BYU–Hawaii will face Chaminade on Thursday in Honolulu at 7:30 pm in a Pacific West Conference game.
