Seasiders Defeat Vulcans Again
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team scorched the net in the first half to establish a 17-point halftime lead at 50-33 and went on to defeat UH-Hilo tonight, 83-69, in a non-conference game to improve to 8-1 for the season. Junior Lucas Alves, who was held scoreless in the first half in last night’s battle between the two teams, came out firing on all cylinders tonight and netted 17 of his game-high 26 points in the opening period as the Seasiders shot 58.8 percent in the half to take control of the game.
Alves shot 7-8 from the field, 1-1 from three-point range, and 2-2 from the free throw line in the first 20 minutes of the game while controlling the boards with six of his game-high ten rebounds. As a team the Seasiders shot 20-34 from the field, 5-8 from beyond the arc, and 5-7 from the free throw line in the first period. BYU–Hawaii cooled considerably in the second half, shooting just 8-25 to finish the game at 47.5 percent from the field, but, nevertheless, was able to maintain a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the game.
The ninth-ranked Seasiders led by just seven, at 36-29, with under five minutes to play in the first half, but a jumper and subsequent three-pointer by Alves jump-started a 12-0 run and the Seasiders were in control. Nate Sims scored 13 points for BYU–Hawaii to go with six rebounds and was the only other Seasider to reach double figures in scoring. Trenson Akana tallied nine points and grabbed five rebounds, J.R. Buensuceso added eight points to go with his game-high eight assists, and Jermaine Odjegba also dropped in eight points while pulling down seven rebounds. Jet Chang, Marques Whippy, and A.J. Reilly each scored six points for BYU–Hawaii, with Whippy getting six rebounds and Chang picking up five assists. BYU–Hawaii out-rebounded the Vulcans 41-27 for the game.
Jay DeMaestri led the Vulcans, now 7-5 for the year, with 19 points and eight rebounds. Charlando Brown had 14, Perry Baggett 13, and John Smith ten for UH-Hilo. Smith also had six assists in the loss.
BYU–Hawaii will face Hawaii Pacific on Saturday in Honolulu at 7:30 pm in a Pacific West Conference game.
