Second Half Explosion Carries Seasiders
Honolulu, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the season last night to defeat Drury (MO), 83-62, in the Hoop ‘N Surf Tournament today in a game played at 2:00 in the afternoon after last night’s 8:30 pm start time. The sixth-ranked Seasiders, now 4-1 for the year, took the court a scant 14 hours after returning to Laie after late night’s start and after another hour’s bus ride to Honolulu to play today in the Blaisdell Center. The ordeal showed in the first half as the Seasiders trailed by five, 39-34, at the break but the team roared back in the second half by outscoring the Panthers 49-23 after intermission.
BYU–Hawaii’s defense held the Panthers to just 8-29 (27.6 percent) shooting from the field in the second half while the Seasider offense, led by freshman Jet Chang and senior Nate Sims, shot a torrid 63.3 percent from the field in the half and hit 6-7 (85.7 percent) from beyond the three-point line. Sims jump-started the Seasiders in the second half by nailing a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 39-37 and, following a Panther field goal, Chang drained a three to set off a 14 point run that gave the Seasiders a ten point lead at 51-41 and the Seasiders led handily the rest of the way.
Chang scored 17 of his game-high 19 points after halftime and was 6-6 from the floor and 3-3 from long range in the period. Sims dropped in ten of his 16 points in the second half and was 2-3 from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes.
J.R. Buensuceso tallied ten points for the Seasiders, handed out a game-high five assists, and came up with four steals. Jermaine Odjegba also scored ten points while blocking four shots and snaring five rebounds. Marques Whippy came off the bench to grab 13 rebounds to lead BYU–Hawaii to a 41-32 edge on the glass and chipped in six points and four assists as well. Sims added seven rebounds and four assists to his night’s work. Junior Lucas Alves, plagued by foul trouble in the game, played just 20 minutes for BYU–Hawaii and scored nine points.
Dusty Allen led the Panthers with 12 points. No one else reached double figures for Drury, which fell to 7-3 for the season.
BYU–Hawaii will face Menlo (CA) on Saturday in Laie 7:30 pm to conclude the tournament.
